Ferrovial was founded in 1952 to renovate the Spanish railway |
Ferrovial is founded by Rafael del Pino y Moreno in 1952, whose initial corporate purpose is to set up and operate workshops for RENFE to fit sleepers and replace track.
During the 50s and early 60s, Ferrovial commences hydraulic projects and consolidates in road construction. Toll roads become a new challenge for Ferrovial, which entered this business in 1968.
Then, Ferrovial enters in real estate development and construction continues to advance in and outside Spain (Libya, Mexico, Kuwait and Paraguay). During the 80s, Ferrovial builds 15% of the high-speed railway (AVE) infrastructure between Madrid and Sevilla and undertakes numerous projects for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the Sevilla Universal Exhibition.

Between 1990 and 1995 Rafael del Pino y Calvo-Sotelo becomes the Group Managing Director. Ferrovial, then, begins to reorganize its businesses strategically and renew its management team. It creates subsidiaries for facilities management and car park construction and operation. It acquires Agromán, one of Spain's largest construction companies and creates Ferrovial Medio Ambiente, S.A. as an expression of its environmental concerns. Ferrovial Servicios (Ferroser) is also created to manage street cleaning and urban solid waste collection and provide integral water management.
In 1997, Ferrovial Servicios expands through the acquisition of Ferogasa, the street cleaning and solid waste collection concession company in A Coruña. The following year Cintra (Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte, S.A.) is created to bid for, and manage, concessions (toll roads, airports and car parks) in Spain and other countries. Ferrovial moves into the airport management business by obtaining nine airport concessions in southeast Mexico.

Founded in 1976, Cespa focuses on managing urban services (street cleaning, municipal solid waste collection and treatment, and gardening), where it ranks second in Spain, and it is also one of the leading players in the management and treatment of industrial waste (landfills and industrial waste).
In 2006, Ferrovial takes control of BAA, the world's largest airport management company, thereby becoming the world's leading private sector infrastructure operator. This year, Terminal 4 of Barajas Airport, built by Ferrovial, is inaugurated.
